Fast Battleship Design D
In 1918 a british constructor, Sir Stanley Godall was temporarily assigned to C&R and he brought plans of the Admiral class battlecruisers (HMS Hood) with him. This inspired the US designers to design a somewhat similar, fast battleship. They made 4 plans, A, B , C and D. A and B were BC with 8 X 16"/50 guns, C and D were real fast BBs with 12 X 16"/50 but with somewhat lower speed. But they were extremely costly and design C and D were considerd either too slow as a battlecruiser or too lightly protected as BB.
Design specs.:
Displacement : 54,500 tons
Dimensions : 880 X 108 X 32,3 feet
Speed: 29 knots with 90,000 EHP (turbo-electric drive with 17 boilers, 3 funnels)
Armament : 12 X 16"/50 (probably Mark 2); 16 X 6" and 4 air defense guns, 2 sub and 8 above water TT
Armour : 12"-8" belt (note that there are light belt additions fore and aft, probably ~ 5"); 12" barbettes; 16" Conning tower; No uptake protection; 3"-2" main deck and 2" splinter deck
