In 1916-17 the USN did several studies to find out where should the than standard type battleships evolution finish. The main limit was the locks of the Panam Canal. Surprisingly, even this limit allowed these huge monsters, which displaced 60-90,000 tonnes. We know about 6 studies, four of these were armed with 16" the other two with 18" guns.
